Poetry

it follows you

the roads we walked that night
are silent now
the shadows we cast
don’t cling to the walls
they used to sing those old love songs
now they only crease and crack
with the subtleties of lovers passing by

you shut the window
did not want to
let in the night
but you forgot
to let in the light
there will be a time
to match your fortune to your fate
to swallow
what it is they dropped on your plate

in between
long nights of drinking
staring at dancing shadows that pass screens

you seemed so innocent then,
vulnerable
hard shell to crack
but you were careful
you’re the same lost cause you were then
only now it’s easier to believe

you can’t ever get away from the night
it follows you out into the light
